How to test RS485

Hello,
I followed the instructions in this thread - http://glomation.net/smf/index.php/topic,212.0.html and
made sure that I have the latest uImage installed (Linux GESBC 2.6.27.4 #4 Sat Jun 27 16:17:54 EDT 2009 armv5tejl GNU/Linux).
I enabled the RS485 driver with `devmem2 0xfffd0004 w 0xc00008c1'

But, I still am not able to connect to the RS485 port over ttyS4 using my program.
Is there a standard test that will allow me to test this accurately?

Re: How to test RS485

I got this working by upgrading to the latest Kernel (Linux GESBC 2.6.27.4 #2 Mon Apr 12 11:07:55 EDT 2010 armv5tejl GNU/Linux) and
setting the UART to use RTS signal.

My question is, is there a way to make set the UART to use RTS signal permanently?
My initial reaction is to put this line into /etc/rc.local. Is there a better way?

Re: How to test RS485

The mode register can be set in the kernel or in user space.   A line in rc.local is just as good as putting it at other places.
